1.Ganga Talao( Grand Bassin)

 Located in the southwest district of Savanne, the Ganga Talao is arguably one of the most religious places in Mauritius. At the entry of Grand Bassin, there are two impressive statues which are the giant Shiva statue and The statue of Durga Maa. The natural lake sits inside an extinct volcano crater. Many Hindus go on a pilgrimage journey to Grand Bassin on foot during the festival of Maha Shivaratri, usually around February or March which is the best time to visit Mauritius.

2. Jummah Mosque 

Built-in the middle of the 1800s, the Jummah Masjid Mosque is situated in the heart of Port Louis, on Queen Street. The tall white façades and elaborate sculptures are worth seeing. While the hustle and bustle of the city might put you off, it’s amazingly peaceful inside which makes it a perfect place to find a moment of quietness or pray. This mosque, which is close to China Town, stands as a token of the island’s cultural diversity. 

Another prominent religious place in Port Louis is The Saint-Louis Cathedral, the first church of the island. The church was built in 1756 and named in honour of the canonised King Saint Louis. 

3.Cap Malheureux Church

Notre Dame Auxiliatrice is a picturesque Catholic church located by the seaside in the Cap Malheureux. Built-in the memory of those who died in a shipwreck, this beautiful church is characterised by a particular altar carved out of stone and a bright red roof. It’s one of the most famous churches in Mauritius because of its flaming red roof beautifully contrasting with the blue of the sky and the sea.

4. Shri Sockalingum Meenatchee Ammen Kovil – Kaylasson

This beautiful and sacred Tamil temple goes back to when the indentured labourers came (mainly from India) to work on the sugar plantations in Mauritius. To get themselves through difficult times, they turned to faith and religion and built this place of worship, in the middle of a sugar cane, where many indentured labourers worked. This gorgeous and colourful temple is now one of the must-see religious places in Mauritius and, it showcases the magnificent Dravidian architecture seen in every aspect of the temple. 

5. Tien Tan Pagoda

While the Chinese population in Mauritius makes up about 4% of the total population, the Chinese heritage is present in various places throughout the country, notably in Port Louis. Found at the foot of Signal Mountain, the Tien Tan Chinese Pagoda built-in 1942 has a unique structure and architecture, reminiscent of Buddhist monasteries and, is surrounded by a beautiful garden of flowers. One of 11 pagodas in Mauritius, the Tien Tan Pagoda is one of the oldest and most fascinating religious places in Mauritius.
