⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  4.9 over 51200+ Reviews

When travellers ask me what nature site in the south of Mauritius truly explains the island’s past, I often point them to Ebony Forest Reserve in Chamarel. The road up the hills is scenic, quiet, and far from busy tourist zones. Many visitors choose taxis to Ebony Forest Reserve because the mountain roads can be narrow and unfamiliar for first-time drivers.

As a local driver, I have brought hundreds of travellers here over the years. Some combine the visit with nearby waterfalls and viewpoints. Others simply come for a peaceful morning walk in the forest. Either way, arranging taxis to Ebony Forest Reserve gives you flexibility, safety, and enough waiting time to explore without stress.

Have a Question?

Where is Ebony Forest Reserve located?

Ebony Forest Reserve is a conservation area in Chamarel dedicated to restoring Mauritius’ native forest. The reserve offers hiking trails, jeep safaris, and viewpoints over the south-west coast. Nearby attractions include Chamarel Waterfall, the Seven Coloured Earth, and scenic viewpoints along the mountain road.

What you will see at Ebony Forest Reserve

When travellers book taxis to Ebony Forest Reserve, they usually expect a short nature walk. In reality, the visit is much richer and more educational than most people imagine. The reserve is part of a major conservation project in Mauritius that aims to restore native forests and protect rare wildlife that once existed across the island.

Most visits begin at the reception area where visitors are introduced to the history of Mauritius’ forests. Guides explain how the island originally looked before human settlement and how many native plants disappeared over time. This short introduction helps visitors understand why the reserve exists today and why protecting these ecosystems is so important.

From there, the tour continues along a raised wooden walkway that passes through one of the last restored ebony forests on the island. Walking above the forest floor allows visitors to observe the ecosystem without disturbing it. The path is peaceful and shaded, making it a relaxing experience even on warm days.

While walking through the forest, guests often spot native birds flying between the trees. Some visitors are lucky enough to see rare species that have slowly returned to the area thanks to conservation efforts. The calm atmosphere and fresh mountain air make this part of the visit one of the highlights of the day.

At the end of the trail, visitors reach a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the south-west coast of Mauritius. On clear days you can see Le Morne mountain, the lagoon, and the green valleys surrounding Chamarel. Many travellers pause here to take photos or simply enjoy the quiet landscape before continuing their visit.

Activities you can do inside Ebony Forest Reserve

Many travellers who use taxis to Ebony Forest Reserve are surprised by how many activities the reserve offers. While the forest walk is the most common option, there are several ways to explore the area depending on your interests and fitness level.

The guided forest walk is the experience most visitors choose. During this walk, local guides explain the plants, trees, and wildlife found in the forest. They also share stories about Mauritius’ natural history and the challenges of restoring native ecosystems.

For visitors who enjoy hiking, the reserve offers longer trails that climb higher into the hills. One of these routes leads to a mountain viewpoint that provides an incredible 360-degree panorama of the south-west region. The walk is slightly challenging but the views from the top are well worth the effort.

Some travellers prefer a more relaxed experience. In that case, the reserve offers a guided 4×4 safari through the forest. This option allows visitors to reach the main viewpoints and learn about the reserve without walking long distances. It is particularly popular with families or guests who prefer a comfortable way to explore nature.

There is also a short discovery tour that focuses on the plant nursery and restoration work taking place inside the reserve. Here visitors learn how young native plants are grown and later replanted across the hills to rebuild the forest. It is a fascinating glimpse into how conservation projects operate in Mauritius.

Why the reserve is important for Mauritius

When visitors arrive at Ebony Forest, many of them realise that the site is not just a tourist attraction. It is also an important conservation project working to protect Mauritius’ natural heritage.

Over the centuries, large parts of the island’s native forest disappeared due to agriculture and development. This caused many plant and animal species to decline or even disappear. Ebony Forest Reserve is part of the effort to reverse that trend by restoring the landscape with native trees and protecting wildlife.

The conservation team works continuously to remove invasive plants and encourage native species to grow again. They also monitor bird populations and create safe habitats for endangered animals. Because of these efforts, several rare species have slowly returned to the forest.

Visitors who explore the reserve are therefore supporting this conservation work. Entrance fees and guided tours help fund the restoration programmes that protect the island’s unique biodiversity.

For travellers who enjoy learning about nature and sustainability, Ebony Forest offers a deeper experience than many other attractions in Mauritius.

Insider advice from a local driver

After bringing many visitors here over the years, I often share a few simple tips with guests booking taxis to Ebony Forest Reserve.

The first recommendation is to arrive early in the day. Morning visits are quieter and the weather is usually cooler, which makes the forest walk more comfortable.

Comfortable shoes are also very important. Some trails include uneven ground and small climbs, so proper footwear helps visitors enjoy the walk without difficulty.

Another good idea is to combine the reserve with nearby attractions in Chamarel. Many travellers visit the famous Chamarel Waterfall or the Seven Coloured Earth on the same day. Since these sites are only a short drive away, it is easy to create a pleasant half-day or full-day itinerary.

Finally, take time to enjoy the viewpoints. The hills around Chamarel offer some of the most beautiful landscapes in Mauritius. Watching the ocean from the mountain ridge while the wind moves through the forest is an experience many visitors remember long after the trip ends.

That is one reason why taxis to Ebony Forest Reserve remain such a popular option. The journey itself is scenic, and having a local driver makes it easier to discover small viewpoints and quiet corners of the region that many travellers would otherwise miss.
